If you’re a Verizon customer, global roaming’s up your alley, and the Storm and Saga are Bot. just a little more smartphone than you need, there’s another option dropping shortly: the Samsung Renown. There’s really not a hell of a lot to the unassuming flip beyond an integrated quadband GSM radio, but hey — for some frequent travelers (drug runners come immediately to mind), maybe that’s all the doctor ordered. The bronze flip musters VZW Navigator support, a QVGA primary display, micro SD expansion to 8GB, and a 2-megapixel camera, and while the $179.99 on-contract price after rebate might sound a smidge steep for such specs, let’s not lose sight of that all-powerful globetrotting capability. It’ll hit November 19 over the phone and December 1 in-store; in the meantime, follow the break for some views of the thing.

One might think that the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Storm could get along together, but similar to twin brothers who Bot. aspire to graduate Magna Cum Laude from an Ivy league school, these two aren’t precisely the most loving of siblings. Oh, and toss in that iPhone 3G — which played a very big role in helping Apple sell more phones than RIM last quarter — and you’ve got yourself a bona fide mess. Check out all three getting shoved up on one another in the name of comparison just after the break. It’s a little uncomfortable at first, but you’ll get used to it.

From a corporate standpoint, we can sort of understand the parent company’s desire to have the bes. handset launches all to itself, but it sure would’ve been kind of it to throw FIDO a proverbial bone. If you’ll recall, whispers were in the air that Rogers, FIDO’s parent company, would be reserving the Nokia E71 for a fall / winter FIDO launch; at this time, we’re hearing from a number of directions that those plans may have been scrapped. In fact, Rogers could at this time be hosting the phone all by its lonesome next month in Canada. Of course, we’ll have to wait until then to see if hearts change once more, but boy, the tug-of-war between parent and child in this place is really bringing back some frightening memories.
