A reasonably attractive pair of phones that have been in the wings for a while at this time on Verizon are finally hitting next week — October 6, to be exact. The Motorola VU30 Rapture is the first of the pair, a glossy flip set to do battle with Sprint’s VE20 featuring a 2-megapixel camera, touch-sensitive external display (Verizon calls it “vanishing”), GPS, and EV-DO for $179.99 on a two-year contract or $299.99 with no Hancock required. Next, we have the Samsung u650 Sway, a silvery slider coming in at 0.47 inches thick and a feature list eerily reminiscent of the VU30’s, right down to the 2-megapixel cam. Where they got the name “Sway” for a slider, though, is beyond us.

Apple has released the first beta of iPhone firmware 2.2 to developers, and we’re hearing that it’ll cause your phone to sprout wings, run Android in emulation, connect to fully-operational LTE and WiMAX networks all over the world, and bring world peace. Oh, and it’ll be able to copy and paste things you never dreamed possible, like ponies and happiness. On a more serious note, though, no one seems to have a firm grip on precisely what it adds yet — push notifications are high on the wishlist, as continuously — so we’ll keep you posted (and you do the same).

HTC’s “Jade,” as the Touch 3G is known internally, has just earned FCC approval — that’s the good news. Unfortunately, the only approval it’s plan to see in the FCC’s jurisdiction is of the 2G sort, because the blasted thing only features WCDMA on the 900 and 2100MHz bands. Those lucky enough to enjoy the handset at full speed will be the lucky beneficiaries of 7.2Mbs HSDPA, while North Americans have the luxury of poking along at a theoretical max of 200kbps or so (and we can just forget about chatting and browsing at the same time). But hey, at least we’ll have the FCC off our backs when we’re Makeit.
