LG Accolade, Clout coming to Verizon?

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Verizon — like pretty much any North American carrier — has an amazing propensity for offering countless, virtually anonymous flips from LG and Samsung. Yes, granted, they seem to be better at catering to the specific “needs” of Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile more than any other manufacturer — and for many customers, it’s hard to argue with a decent-looking phone that costs a few bucks on contract — but you’d think they’d be able to keep these handsets in the lineup for literally years on end without a single change. Alas, PhoneArena seems to have the inside line on a couple new ones for Big Red that do little to move the low-end needle, including this VX5600 Accolade (pictured) whose headline features are a 1.3 megapixel cam and Bluetooth support. There’s apparently a second flip in the pipeline called the “Clout” that should be fixing to replace the year-old VX8360, so yeah, nothing that’s going knock your socks off in this batch of unverified information. Hey, they can’t all be Snapdragon-powered beasts with WVGA displays, right?

Samsung Moment gets a firmware update, convenience not included

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Taking your phone into a service center for a firmware update is so 1999, but Samsung apparently didn’t get the memo, because Sprint just declare that you’ll need to head into one of the carrier’s stores with a repair facility to get your Moment re-upped. Of course, the good news in this place is that the Moment’s getting an update, period — it improves AGPS and battery life, among other things — but the bad news is that it bucks Android’s trend of magically updating over thin air and doesn’t include the promised 2.1 core. Presumably that stuff is yet to come, and happily, Sprint says that “the ability to download the update directly on your Moment will be available in the near future.” Let’s just pray this is the first and last time you need to put on pants and leave the house this year.

Sanyo SCP-2700 now available on Sprint; inspires busy thumbs, not much else

Friday, January 15th, 2010

As promised, the SCP-2700 has come to Sprint, bringing that famous Sanyo… ah, “sensibility” to the low-cost QWERTY game. Don’t expect EV-DO, but you’ll still make off with AGPS, a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and a dedicated text button (surprisingly important in this market segment) for your hard-earned $29.99 on contract in your choice of Impulsive Pink and Deep Blue.
