Vodafone spicing up HTC Legend with 360 services

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Vodafone 360 has yet to come to Android — but really, what’s stopping it? Though it initially launched on some custom Samsung dumbphones, the megacarrier’s cloud-ish social platform ended up spreading to the desktop and a couple of S60 devices, so there’s no good reason we couldn’t see it on smartphones across the whole range. Indeed, the company has at this time declare that the Legend will be loaded up with 360 services of some sort, but what’s really engaging attention is that the Desire won’t be, even though Vodafone will be carrying both models. It’s possible that HTC wants to leave its top-of-the-range model as virgin as it possibly can be, but at any rate, just remember this simple guide, folks: if you hate 360 but you’ve got to get in on HTC’s latest round of hotties, get the Desire; if you like it, get the Legend or prepare to live without it.

Motorola China has a bunch of smartphones on tap this year

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

China is one of Motorola’s last safe havens for Windows Mobile-powered devices, but even the Far East is falling to the inevitable onslaught of little green robots — one need look no further than the XT701, MT710, and XT800 for evidence of that. That leads us to believe that the company’s 2010 haul of smartphones for China will be primarily Android-based — particularly in light of China Mobile’s commitment to it through Open Mobile System — expanding on comments in Korea this week by Moto’s GM of the mobile devices business that there will “probably another four or five [smartphones] later” in the region following the recent announcements of the MT710 and XT800 and the upcoming launch of the XT701. Considering that China continues to be a stronghold for Moto, we’re not surprised to see so much of the company’s product R&D dollars go that way — as long as the rest of the world ends up getting some trickle-down benefit, of course.

Analyst estimates 100,000 DROID smartphones sold in first weekend

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

The lines may have been subdued, but one way or another, it sounds as if Motorola managed to sell Truly a few DROIDs over the weekend. According to analyst Mark McKechnie at Broadpoint AmTech, the outfit managed to move around 100,000 of ‘em during the opening weekend, with most stores moving at least half of their original shipments. He also estimated that Moto would sell one million Android-based phones in Q4 2009 alone (which includes the CLIQ, obviously), and that he viewed the first few days as “encouraging.” It’s been a long, long while since we’ve been able to say this, but hey — nice job, Motorola.
