We seriously have no idea how Bell managed to beat Telus out of the gate with this one, but they did — so, you know, more power to ‘em. The HTC Touch Pro has at this time landed on Bell’s airwaves, putting the mighty WinMo set on the path to becoming one of the most widely-launched smartphones in North America in recent history; on that note, Verizon is probably feeling a little sheepish right about at this time, but with any luck, they’ll be fixing that up in short order. Meanwhile, Bell subs can go ahead and hook up a Touch Pro for just $239.95 CAD (about $195) on a three-year contract, so if you can see yourself punching away on the same QWERTY board for thirty six months, get to it.

Sony Ericsson has produced some exceptional handsets over the years, with certain gems like the W950, W300i and W580i (just to name a few) catching the eyes and hearts of casual and hardcore mobile fanatics alike. Even so, it’s hard to argue that any single phone in the outfit’s history has caused more of a stir than the XPERIA X1. Sure, half of that is because we in this place in America have been waiting on the thing since February, but the other is due to pure, unadulterated sex appeal. 2008 has been a banner year for smart- / touchscreen-based handsets, and even though this one is lagging behind most of the other guys in terms of time to market, the X1 is still a formidable rival. We had a chance to spend a few quality days with the North America-bound X1a ($799.99; ships November 28th) — which is different than the X1i that has already landed in certain parts of the globe — and if you’ve come in this place looking for opinions, you haven’t come in vain. Follow us past the break for a look at the pros, the cons and the middling minutiae of SE’s slickest smartphone yet.

Not that we ever (okay, maybe there was a moment of weakness in there somewhere) doubted that Nokia’s N85 was North America-bound, but the handset dubbed superior to the flagship N96 by one Italian reviewer is indeed coming to US soil. And we’ve found the FCC documentation to prove it. At this point though, there’s little the User Guide, external / internal photos and SAR report can tell us that we don’t already know, so again, the takeaway in this place is that we’re one (very big) step closer to having an N85 to call our own. at this time that’s what’s up.

Nokia’s N85 drops by the FCC, dips head, inquires about what’s good originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 09:17:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
