To anyone even remotely familiar with Nokia’s history, this tidbit won’t come as a surprise at all. In fact, we’ve been hearing “Linux” and “Nokia” in the same sentence for years. At Nokia World in Barcelona — the same place where the almighty N97 (pictured) was unveiled — Ukko Lappalainen, vice president at Nokia’s markets unit, informed Reuters that “in the longer perspective, Linux will become a serious alternative for our high-end phones.” Potentially more engaging attention was his followup line: “I don’t see anything in Android which would make it better than Linux maemo.” Truly frankly, we’d be entirely more interested if this was some revolutionary epiphany, but it’s basically just more of the same song and dance. at this time, if an N98 pops out next month with a freakishly awesome and nimble mobile variant of Ubuntu, well — that’s a horse of a different color.

We knew this day would eventually come, but somehow we’re still misting up a little — Linux has been ported to the iPhone and iPod touch. Dev Team member planetbeing is the mastermind in charge of bringing everyone’s favorite open-source OS to Apple’s handhelds, and while it’s a little rough around the edges (read: no touchscreen drivers, sound, or WiFi / cellular radio support), it’s definitely the first step on the road to hacking nirvana. The team is hard at work, and it even sounds like they’re thinking about porting Android in the near future (!), so hit the read link to try it out and lend a hand if you can — or just head on past the break for a quick vid of the port in all its text-scrolling glory.

It’s pretty fricking hard to believe that Motorola didn’t have any touchscreen phones in the North American market before the Krave, isn’t it? It’s true, though — so when it came time to draw inspiration for that all-important first device, designers looked to none other than Moto’s own MING series, a popular (and fairly attractive, if we do say so ourselves) line of Linux-based smartphones sold in chin. for inspiration. In the course of its metamorphosis into a thoroughly Americanized phone, the Krave (Kring? MAVE?) lost GSM, gained CDMA and 3G, and found itself locked in to Verizon. All things considered, that’s a pretty traumatic conversion there — so how’d it end up faring? We took a quick look at the ZN4 to find out.
