Samsung Transform for Sprint: what is it?

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

We normally wouldn’t post news about a Sprint device in the FCC without any juicy details on decent specs, but hear us out — this one’s kind of engaging attention. As our tipster noted to us, the prefix “SPH” on Samsung phones typically means that particular model is heading for Sprint, and an SPH-M920 got FCC approval not long ago. A quick search reveals that the M920 appears to be christened the “Transform,” suggesting that this phone… well, transforms somehow. Of course, that could be as simple as a sliding keyboard or as strange and unique as Verizon’s LG Versa — we really have no idea — but it’s notable that the Transform has a WiFi certification under its belt for 802.11b / g / n, so we can assume the phone’s no slouch and might even fall into smartphone (read: Android) territory. Any educated guesses out there?

Multitouch keyboard swiped from Droid X, hacked and color-matched for EVO 4G

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

One of the most compelling features of Motorola’s upcoming Droid X for Verizon is the multitouch capability of the keyboard, which in theory means you can do things like press shift and a letter at the same time; in practice, it means that you can belt out a message faster. Needless to say, owners of other Android devices want it, and xda-developers members have obliged as usual, even stopping along the way to change the Droid X’s red accents to green to better suit the EVO 4G’s UI color palette. Once the APK is installed (you’ll have to sideload it, naturally), it seems like you’ll be able to chosen and use it just as you would any other input method on the phone. Score one for platform flexibility, and score another for hackers.

LG leaks in Brazil include Android-powered C710, cute T310

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Brazil’s CelularCafe looks to have scored a four-pack of fresh leaks out of LG, most notably a new Android handset being called the C710 that looks suspiciously like Verizon’s Ally but apparently lacks a QWERTY keyboard, steps up to a 5 megapixel cam, and includes 802.11n WiFi, a new spec sheet line item that’s been picking up steam with higher-end smartphones as of late. Next, there’s the T300, a low-end full touchscreen device with a 2 megapixel cam that the site has taken to calling the Cookie Light; next to it lies the slightly-spiffier T310 (pictured) with a larger display and irresistibly cute styling. Finally, there’s a forgettable A130 clamshell with EDGE data and an FM radio with recording capability — needless to say, not the most exciting of the bunch. No word on when, or where, we might see any of these for sale.
