Ugh, this is just downright depressing no matter how you spin it. Sure, it’s just the reality of business and all, but it’s no fun to hear that 270 staffers will soon be looking for employment when UIQ Technology finishes climbing into the grave. After hacking 200 jobs in June and being coined “dead” by Sony Ericsson’s Patrick Olson, All About Symbian has it that the company has put its remaining employees “on notice of dismissal.” We’re told that SE has agreed to “continue funding the company on a by month by month basis in order to allow it to investigate options for the future,” but from the outside looking in, we’d say the outlook is bleak. Thankfully, it sounds like those affected will at least be assisted as they exit, but at this time would probably be an opportune time to shed a tear for UIQ as we knew it.

Hiding behind a press release titled “Nokia continues its change and renews some of its activities,” the woodsmen of Espoo are swinging a corporate axe of woe. In total, the mobile phone giant plans to cut something on the order of about 600 jobs in its Sales and Marketing, R&D, and global operations. Nothing compared to the cuts at Motorola but certainly unwelcome news for those affected.

Remember back in those freewheelin’ days of 2006 when men were men, phones were phones, and Motorola was rumored to have been seriously considering taking Sagem off Safran Group’s hands? Yeah, well those days are long gone; Moto’s a mere husk of what it once was at the peak of the RAZR craze, and Concerning Sagem, they’re getting ready to fly the “under new ownership” banner in front of headquarters. Venture capital firm Sofinnova has purchased 90 percent of Sagem for around €220 million ($343 million) off current parent Safran, intending to rename it Sagem Wireless (don’t get too crazy with the name change there, guys) and turn it into an all-ODM shop not unlike fellow French firm ModeLabs. Roughly half of Sagem’s staff will survive the transfer intact, while most of the rest should be offered jobs in Safran’s other lines of business or firms in which Sofinnova holds a stake.
