Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 gets software update (and no, it’s not Eclair)

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Sony Ericsson had previously committed to the fourth quarter for an update to Android 2.1 on its X10, and as far as we know, that date’s still holding firm — in other words, the update that’s at this time rolling out to units around the world is still the same old Donut you’re used to. That said, it looks to be a worthwhile boost thanks to promised performance improvements in the camera app and elsewhere, the addition of a free backup app, and — in certain locales, anyhow — PlayNow functionality has been added. It’s probably not enough to convert a non-believer… but hey, for owners, it’s something.

Motorola pushes back Android 2.1 update for CLIQ, CLIQ XT

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

We’ve seen this coming for at least a week or two at this time, but for what it’s worth, Motorola has at this time made it official that the CLIQ and CLIQ XT won’t be seeing upgrades to Android 2.1 in the second quarter of the year (which ends today) as had been previously promised. That’s certainly a bummer, especially considering that the devices run Cupcake, which is — at this point, anyway — a truly ancient iteration of the platform that many modern, popular Android apps don’t even support (Donut seems to be a pretty popular cut-off point). So, when is it coming at this time? Hard to say; all Moto’s saying is that it’ll happen “as soon as possible” and that it’s plan to “take more time on the release to optimize the experience in some key areas.” Droid X, anyone?

LG commits to Android 1.6 — not 2.0 — for Rogers’ Eve

Friday, February 5th, 2010

We suppose we should be excited that Canada’s version of the LG GW620 Eve is getting any major update at all, but still: what the heck? LG Canada has communicated via its official Twitter account this week that Rogers’ version of the phone — its second QWERTY-equipped Android set after the Dream — would be getting an update to Android 1.6 (known to the bakers in the room as Donut, of course) this Spring. What’s crazier, it apparently won’t be an over-the-air boost since they’re saying it’ll be available from both LG’s and Rogers’ sites. That’s not a very big deal, but seriously guys, why 1.6? If it were to drop today it’d feel old — and by Spring, when HTC, Motorola, and likely Samsung all have 2.1 updates at the ready, this is just plan to look a little silly, isn’t it?
