You’d think that a phone promising to becoming Nokia’s 2009 flagship would want some serious computational power under its shell, but the word on the street is that the N97 is actually plan to carry over the same ARM 11 core used by its forebears. That might be a disappointment for anyone hoping that they’ll be able to replace a MID, netbook, or eight-core Hollywood CGI workstation with an unsuspecting handset — but if it’s any consolation, other unverified information suggest (thankfully, may we add) that the ARM 11 will be clocked higher than the E71, which comes in at 369MHz. For all we know, the processor specs haven’t been finalized since they haven’t shown up on Nokia’s N97 site yet, so maybe we’ll end up with 1GHz and seven minutes of battery life. Would be a productive seven minutes, wouldn’t it?

Some of those sweet-sounding bug fixes neatly tucked away in the last firmware update for Europe’s N78 have finally trickled down to the second-class citizens left of the pond — a bit late, yes, but if it’s any consolation, users will still be able to take advantage of Nokia’s slick over-the-air interface to grab the goods. Perhaps the most important change in this build is improvement of the sensitivity of the right soft key, a pretty big problem out of the gate that plagued our test unit. Speaking of sensitivity, the Navi wheel’s has apparently improved as well, as has the music player’s ability to remember where you left off in podcasts. Thanks for not forgetting your loyal North American customers, Nokia, but seriously, could we try to keep the love just a little more in sync?

So Hop-On apparently got tired of showing rendered vaporware after rendered vaporware and finally came to the table with some real products, but there’s a little problem: one of them, the HOP1803, is a dead ringer for Nokia’s XpressMusic 5310. We figure Hop-On probably just went to their friendly local manufacturer in Shenzen and ordered a handful of products to start distributing, which is totally cool, but they either failed to turn on their blatant ripoff radar while they were shopping around or clearly didn’t care. If it’s any consolation, Nokia, the 5310’s specs totally smack around the HOP1803’s, though we’re guessing the “X-Press Music” branding on the side of the doppelganger might still attract some legal wrath — especially since Hop-On allegedly plans to try hawking this thing in the States.
