Currently, over 400,000 unlocked iPhones are roaming around China. at this time that chin. Mobile is about to officially launch Apple’s latest handset in the world’s most populous country, we can only imagine that figure going up. In a bizarre twist of trying to keep a homegrown 3G standard (TD-SCDMA) alive, the carrier has declare that it is intending to launch the mobile with WiFi and 3G disabled — a move that would make it less appealing to those who may be considering buying one, unlocking it and using it on the expected W-CDMA network from chin. Telecom. Uncool, chin. Mobile. Very uncool.

Remember HTC’s maybe-it’ll-replace-the-Touch Opal? Well, it would seem if the unverified information of this set existing are true — and hey, they can be — it’ll not be replacing anything if it only features GPRS / EDGE. Specs potentially feature the same 200MHz OMAP CPU, a 2 megapixel camera, no 3G, and apparently TouchFLO 3D, too. No dates, prices, or anything else in this place, though we’ll hopefully hear something either way soon.

chin. Unicom aside, chin. Mobile is apparently still very interested in bringing the iPhone to mainland China — and thanks to the return of the traditional revenue model for the iPhone 3G, balls are once again rolling to make that happen. chin. Mobile called the original iPhone’s model the single biggest “hurdle” to sealing a deal, and at this point, only “practical” issues remain — probably revolving around the fact that chin. has no WCDMA networks to speak of, if we had to guess, which would raise question about precisely how the iPhone 3G should be marketed there. For the time being, chin. Mobile says there’s no schedule for bringing it to market — and we know we can’t Rel. on Apple for much guidance there until a deal actually happens — so we’ll just have to wait and see what those execs can get knocked out behind closed doors.
