Samsung Restore coming to Sprint, has its eye on saving the world

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Looking for a landscape QWERTY slider that’s 84 percent recyclable? Well, you’ve pretty much pigeonholed yourself into the Samsung Restore, Sprint’s latest in a line of eco-friendly devices that kicked off in earnest with the Reclaim last year. Like the others, the Restore is a fairly basic device with a 2 megapixel camera, microSD expansion up to 32GB, stereo Bluetooth, and a pair of keypads for operation both in the closed and open positions — needless to say, you won’t find even a hint of a smartphone operating system in this place. It comes bundled with an Energy Star 2.0-compliant charger which, conveniently, sits in a 100 percent recyclable box without a user manual — it’s only available online so you can feel good about saving a tree or two (not to say you won’t be able to master the phone on your own within an hour or two anyway). Look for it to launch “this Summer” in your choice of “Midnight” or “Limeade” for $50 on contract after rebate. Follow the break for Samsung’s press release.

What is this Nokia with CDMA?

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

We don’t typically post FCC filings we can’t identify or link to a product we’re expecting, but this odd Nokia filing caught our eye. It’s got a CDMA radio with EV-DO and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, which means it’s likely headed to Verizon considering how chummy those two have gotten over the past couple years — nothing unusual there. What is odd, though, is the outline of the device. Nokia’s FCC filings that are still under confidentiality typically show an ID label with a correct outline of the phone, and if this particular outline is correct, we’ve got a doozy on our hands. The model code of RM-687 is consistent with Espoo’s handsets, so we guess this is something that would be sold to consumers — but what is it? It almost looks like a walkie talkie, but is it an ultra-rugged model designed to give the G’zOne series a run for its money, or are we just looking at some internal portion of the phone like a circuitboard or battery cover?

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 coming to Rogers on April 15, free Bluetooth headset in tow

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

So who’s the first North American carrier to pick up Sony Ericsson’s high-end X10? AT&T? T-Mobile? Nope — it’s Canada’s Rogers, which is once again showing its superior Android prowess by getting first dibs on a phone that plenty of folks have been anticipating since its announcement late last year. Looks like April 15 has been locked in as the carrier’s date with destiny, but there’s more to the story than that: they’ll be tossing in a gratis Sony Ericsson MW600 Bluetooth headset with integrated FM radio if you’re an existing customer who’s eligible for a hardware upgrade. It’s actually a pretty deluxe deal — the MW600 retails for almost $100 — so if you were on the fence about whether to pull the trigger on the upgrade, this might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
