DROID tethering? It’s coming early 2010, says Verizon

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

When the Motorola DROID debuts in Verizon Wireless stores bright and early this Friday, one nice little feature that won’t be making an appearance yet is tethering, for computing with your laptop on-the-go when that Android 2.0 interface just won’t cut it. We’re pretty sure that missing functionality won’t be lessening the early adopter crowds too much, but if you are so inclined, Gearlog’s confirmed with VZW that its “Broadband Access Connect” tethering plan is indeed coming to the device, but not until sometime early 2010. at this time, how about muscling Motorola and / or Google for some of that double-finger pointing our fine European friends get to indulge in?

Verizon VX8575 Chocolate Touch confirmed to be uglier than that other Chocolate Touch

If you’ve been loving the pictures and videos we’ve been bringing you of the lusciously slim BL40 Chocolate Touch, but holding your breath since a certain blurry photo a few weeks ago showed a rather different Chocolate Touch, we have some bad news. According to Phone Arena News, a Verizon “focus group” (with a questionable sense of aesthetics) decided that the BL40 was crap, and so the somewhat unfortunate looking and definitely asymmetrical VX8575 has been blessed for domestic release as “Chocolate Touch.” It looks to be standard fare featurephone stuff, with a 3.2MP camera, WVGA TFT display, and a browser that will support some subset of HTML. No word on if or when the BL40 will also be making an appearance at Verizon stores, but if we’d been pushed to the curb for something this busted we certainly wouldn’t come back — at least not without a very big bouquet accompanied by a sincere apology.

Google and Verizon were awfully coy this morning regarding the upcoming Android devices that’ll be launching on Big Red over the next few weeks, but you know, that certainly looks like a Verizon-branded HTC Hero in Eric’s hand there, doesn’t it? And over on the right, well, that’s precisely what the Motorola Sholes looks like, isn’t it? Cat’s out of the bag, fellas — might as well push up those launch dates.
