While Americans have been enjoying the spoils of the RC29 and RC30 updates for a matter of hours at this time, folks in the UK have finally been treated to an update of their own. The RC8 update, which was recently delivered to Brits over the air, looks to be a single update that mashes together the fixes found in Bot. the RC29 and RC30 updates available in the US. Initial reports suggest that the phone at this time runs a touch cooler, though it’s being debated whether or not battery life has improved or worsened. Have any of you across the pond been able to test it out and see what’s new?

Teardown specialist iSuppli is at it again, digging through the G1’s guts this time around in an effort to wrap its inquisitive brain around the inaugural Android handset’s bill of materials. The result? $144, which naturally doesn’t reflect HTC’s R&D — an additional expense that might have been unusually low for the G1 considering HTC’s overwhelming expertise in manufacturing all things mobile. For the record, this is about $30 less than iSuppli’s July estimate for the 8GB iPhone 3G, though the comparison isn’t terribly fair considering that the G1 has a mere pittance of internal storage by comparison. There’s no telling what T-Mobile pays HTC for each and every G1 it sells, but we pay $179 (or less) on contract — so it seems HTC is making itself a nice little profit right out of the gate and customers aren’t footing much of the bill. At least, not until they’ve gone a few months into their two-year agreements.

iSuppli says T-Mobile G1 costs $144 to make, nothing to love originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 13:51:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

HTC goes Asia-Pacific; G1 in China by July?

While the iPhone has an on-again off-again relationship with the Chinese market, seemingly unable to commit to that most populous of nations, unlocked HTC G1s are said to be selling like gangbusters there, a tidbit that surely didn’t escape HTC’s notice. By the sound of it the company is ready to make its feelings official, pledging its undying love (and Android handsets) to arrive in Asia-Pac markets in the first half of 2009. Additionally, the Touch 3G should be on sale in Taiwan as of at this time, with the Touch HD hitting there before the end of the year. While chin. isn’t specifically mentioned in the report, it’s certainly the major market in that region. If HTC could beat Apple to the streets of Shanghai that would be a coup of epic proportions, setting the stage for a global battle of smartphone dominance. Place your bets, folks.
