Motorola Grasp reminds us company still does Android-free gear

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

It may not be the EX112 / EX115 they seem to be getting down in Brazil, but the Motorola Grasp isn’t far off, proving that Motorola’s still committed to delivering non-Android phones in market segments where… well, Android might kinda be overkill. The CDMA / EV-DO phone is capable of operating both on 800 / 1900MHz and on AWS bands, meaning we wouldn’t be surprised to see it land on regionals like MetroPCS where AWS has started to play a prominent role. It’s got a 1.3 megapixel cam, 3.5mm headphone jack, AGPS, stereo Bluetooth, microSD expansion to 8GB, and — something Moto has been playing up since the Renew — an eco-friendly design with a completely recyclable shell when you’ve finished texting on that QWERTY keypad for the last time. Look for it to launch this quarter.

LG Wink series custom crafted for ‘Generation Z,’ Gen Y need not apply

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Generation Z, as far as we can tell, roughly refers to kiddies born between 1991 and 2009 — which means that if you’re the ripe old age of 20, LG’s not really looking to target you with its new full-touch Wink line, specifically identified as a Gen Z special in the press release. Of course, considering the specs, you probably won’t be shedding many tears; the entry-level Wink (pictured left) has just a 2.4-inch display, the Wink Style isn’t much more generous at 2.8, and the “high end” Wink 3G (pictured right) seems to be the only one of the bunch with high-speed data. All three have 3.5mm headphone jacks, integrated FM radios, and microSD expansion, but if you’re an American Gen Z’er, don’t get too excited — it’s only slated for Europe and the Middle East this month followed by Latin America, the CIS, and “chosen Asian countries” later in the third quarter. Follow the break for LG’s release.

Android 2.2 coming to the full myTouch 3G range

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

TmoNews has it on good authority that the entire line of myTouch 3G devices — the original, the 3.5mm jack update, and the Slide — will get upgraded with Android 2.2, as evidenced by a fascinating shot of a pamphlet the site has posted. Users of the older devices will also get the same Genius Button functionality that was just rolled out on the Slide, along with the updated Faves app and full Microsoft Exchange support, breathing new life into a phone that first saw life as the Magic well over a year ago. We don’t have a timeframe for the updates other than that they’re “coming soon,” so we’ll keep an eye out.
