For Rogers, HTC Magic + Sense = Magic+

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Thought that one of the first major Android devices in the world would go away without a fight? Think again! T-Mobile and Rogers have taken two very different roads to extend the lives of their HTC Sapphire-based devices. Big Magenta, of course, has opted to make a hardware tweak, adding a much-needed 3.5mm headphone jack and spitting out a faux wood limited edition; Rogers, meanwhile, rather suddenly updated the firmware with Sense. Oh, but that’s not all — it turns out that Rogers views the Sense upgrade as such a big deal that it’s changing the name of the phone altogether, tacking a plus symbol on the end. Yep, that’s right: meet the Magic+. Apart from Sense on 1.5 with a promise of 2.1 down the road, though, there’s nothing materially new in this place, so don’t feel too bad if you’ve been stuck with one of the plus-less models. No, seriously.

Nokia 6303i Classic announced, ‘guarantees fun for a long time without charging’

Monday, February 8th, 2010

If you were waiting for a mild refresh of Nokia’s 6303 Classic before taking the plunge on a new handset… well, you’re a strange character, but the good news is that your time has come at long last. The 2.2-inch QVGA display and 3.2 megapixel camera are both carried over; otherwise, you’ve got a micro-USB connector, 3.5mm headphone jack (good for the integrated FM radio), microSD expansion up to 8GB, Nokia Messaging, and up to a respectable 8 hours of talk time. Needless to say, this isn’t a high-end piece — it tops out with tri-band EDGE, but it’ll run just €105 ($144) unsubsidized when it hits “chosen markets” this quarter.

Samsung S5620 ‘Monte’ possibly leaked, looks better than it sounds

Monday, February 1st, 2010

We know the FCC’s already gotten a gander at this thing, but the general public… well, that’s another story altogether. Daily Mobile has a bunch of shots of what it claims to be Sammy’s upcoming S5620 Monte, a silly name from a company that certainly hasn’t shied away from funny branding in the past (one quick look at the Corby or Rant should be able to verify that for you). Anyhow, we’re told to expect a TouchWiz-powered feature phone in this place with a 3-inch display, HSDPA, and a 3.5mm headphone jack which you can clearly see in some of the pictures. A quick look at the FCC filing also reveals WiFi, though the lack of WCDMA testing indicates that we won’t have 850 or 1900MHz 3G support — in other words, North Americans are out of luck as usual. If we had to guess, this one might get the covers pulled off at MWC next month.
