HTC Desire hits US Cellular today for $200

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Right on time, US Cellular’s CDMA-flavored version of the HTC Desire is at this time available for a nickel under $200, making it the undisputed big dog in the regional carrier’s lineup (its first Android device, the Samsung Acclaim, launched a few weeks back). What you get for your hard-earned money in this place is a surprisingly accurate recreation of the GSM Desire the rest of the world has been enjoying for much of this year, with the same optical pad, 3.7-inch display, 5 megapixel cam, Sense, 1GHz Snapdragon core, and identical industrial design (which, considering how good the original looks, is just fine with us). With the Droid Incredible on tap, Verizon doesn’t really need this thing — but it’d be kinda nice if Sprint picked it up to slot under the EVO, wouldn’t it? Follow the break for the full press release.

Motorola Quench XT5 diagrammed, spec’d?

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

If you lost interest after seeing the picture, we can’t necessarily say we blame you — trackballs are so 2009 — but be that as it may, Motorola still hasn’t declare or released its long-rumored Quench XT5 model. The slate has popped up on Cellpassion today with an apparent diagram (from a user’s manual, it would seem) along with a bunch of specs that would place it squarely in the low- to midrange of the crowded Android arena: Eclair, integrated FM radio, DivX compatibility, and 3.2-inch HVGA display stand out to us, as does triband 7.2Mbps HSDPA radio. Interestingly, 850MHz isn’t one of those 3G bands, which let’s us safely rule out a US launch — logical, of course, considering that the original Quench was a European CLIQ XT in the first place. Around back, you’ve got a 5 megapixel cam with flash, so not all’s lost — but needless to say, it better be priced aggressively to get any traction at this point.

LG Optimus Z now available in South Korea

Friday, July 30th, 2010

declare back in April, LG has at this time launched its so-called Optimus Z Android handset on a pair of South Korea carriers — SK Telecom and KT — bearing model numbers SU950 and KU9500, respectively. You’ve got the usual range of features like a 3.5-inch WVGA display, 5 megapixel cam, DivX compatibility, and support for LG’s neat Air Sync service, but what really sets these bad boys apart is something LG is aptly calling “On Screen Phone”: using Bluetooth, you’ll be able to see and interact with the Optimus Z’s screen from your PC, which is awesome when you’re too lazy to extract the thing from your pocket. It also offers something called “Drag & Shake,” which will let you transfer files between devices with a mere shake of the phone — something that conjures visions of Seoul residents meeting on the street and executing a series of odd gestures to exchange information. Paired with the announcement (which you can read after the break) is an affirmation of LG’s plans to launch an Android tablet as part of the Optimus series in the fourth quarter, which should be an engaging attention foil for the so-called Galaxy Tab. We’ll happily take one of each, of course.
