We normally wouldn’t post news about a Sprint device in the FCC without any juicy details on decent specs, but hear us out — this one’s kind of engaging attention. As our tipster noted to us, the prefix “SPH” on Samsung phones typically means that particular model is heading for Sprint, and an SPH-M920 got FCC approval not long ago. A quick search reveals that the M920 appears to be christened the “Transform,” suggesting that this phone… well, transforms somehow. Of course, that could be as simple as a sliding keyboard or as strange and unique as Verizon’s LG Versa — we really have no idea — but it’s notable that the Transform has a WiFi certification under its belt for 802.11b / g / n, so we can assume the phone’s no slouch and might even fall into smartphone (read: Android) territory. Any educated guesses out there?

[Thanks, Celz]

On that note, we’re excited to report that we’ve gotten a constant barrage of tips today suggesting that the update is at this time going out en masse — and as continuously, the update file’s already been sniffed out for you to download if you haven’t gotten it on your phone yet and you’re as distractingly impatient as we are. Let us know how it goes, alright, folks?

No prices declare just yet, but we’re told that both the “Titanium Black” and “Shiny White” editions will be heavily subsidized when they come out in October.

HTC’s Desire is without doubt one of the headline Android devices of 2010 so far — and heck, when you’re using the already-great Nexus One as a starting point and re-upping it with an optical pad, physical buttons, and Sense, it’s hard to argue otherwise. US Cellular has at this time become the first carrier to bring the device to the States (nearly five grueling months since its first spats of international availability, we’d like to note), and because USCC’s a CDMA carrier, this is naturally a slightly different device than you’re getting elsewhere. Don’t get us wrong, most of the thoughts in our first review of the Desire still apply — but needless to say, this launch is notable enough to warrant a second look. Read on!

Don’t get us wrong, most of the thoughts in our first review of the Desire still apply — but needless to say, this launch is notable enough to warrant a second look. Read on!

The original Samsung Wave — which happens to be the first production Bada device — sports some pretty awesome specs, which probably doesn’t make much sense for a proprietary platform that walks a very fine line between the smartphone and feature phone labels, has an immeasurably small fraction of the market uptake Android has, and isn’t available in any form in the US. To that end, Sammy’s toning things down a bit for round two in the form of the oddly-named Wave 723, which eschews the original’s Super AMOLED display for a 3.2-inch TFT LCD but still manages to squeeze in 802.11n plus a 5 megapixel AF cam with LED flash. The phone’s based on Bada 1.1, which adds UI auto-scaling — in other words, Samsung’s prepping developers to make sure their bountiful Bada apps work seamlessly across devices of different resolutions. No word on pricing, dates, or regional availability at this point, but it’s reasonable to say that it’s devices like the 723 that’ll make or break Bada in the long term. Why this thing isn’t just an Android 2.2 phone with TouchWiz 3.0, though… well, only Samsung can answer that one, we suppose.

Hello, anyone? Seems like all of the hotshot code monkeys out there are (or at least should be) working on bigger, hotter platforms — some of which Samsung is fully supporting — but be that as it may, Sammy has just gotten around to releasing the final 1.0 version of its Bada SDK for devs interested in trying their hand at busting out a Wave app or three. The full SDK package (which includes a number of languages, some of which you may not care to work on) measures over 1.3GB, so it’s plan to take some commitment, a fast connection, and a hard drive not filled to the brim with Android app projects to get it installed.

Right on time, US Cellular’s CDMA-flavored version of the HTC Desire is at this time available for a nickel under $200, making it the undisputed big dog in the regional carrier’s lineup (its first Android device, the Samsung Acclaim, launched a few weeks back). What you get for your hard-earned money in this place is a surprisingly accurate recreation of the GSM Desire the rest of the world has been enjoying for much of this year, with the same optical pad, 3.7-inch display, 5 megapixel cam, Sense, 1GHz Snapdragon core, and identical industrial design (which, considering how good the original looks, is just fine with us). With the Droid Incredible on tap, Verizon doesn’t really need this thing — but it’d be kinda nice if Sprint picked it up to slot under the EVO, wouldn’t it? Follow the break for the full press release.

As we discovered back at its CTIA intro earlier this year, Kyocera’s (and Sanyo’s) Zio isn’t the neatest Android phone you’ve ever seen — nor the most technically impressive — but at $230 without a contract after $20 discount, it’s pretty hard to argue that you’re not getting what you pay for.
Regional carrier Cricket had been promising the Zio for some time, and at this time it’s in this place, just the latest in the company’s newfound push into the smartphone space — a space it’s traditionally avoided in the past — with the recent launch of the Curve 8530 (for the same price as the Zio, coincidentally). Trackballs are officially passé at this point, but considering the budget monthly outlay that Cricket offers, we’ve no doubt they’ll find some takers.
