Vodafone spicing up HTC Legend with 360 services

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Vodafone 360 has yet to come to Android — but really, what’s stopping it? Though it initially launched on some custom Samsung dumbphones, the megacarrier’s cloud-ish social platform ended up spreading to the desktop and a couple of S60 devices, so there’s no good reason we couldn’t see it on smartphones across the whole range. Indeed, the company has at this time declare that the Legend will be loaded up with 360 services of some sort, but what’s really engaging attention is that the Desire won’t be, even though Vodafone will be carrying both models. It’s possible that HTC wants to leave its top-of-the-range model as virgin as it possibly can be, but at any rate, just remember this simple guide, folks: if you hate 360 but you’ve got to get in on HTC’s latest round of hotties, get the Desire; if you like it, get the Legend or prepare to live without it.

T-Mobile G1 getting ultra-minor firmware update

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Feeling like the world is passing you by, G1 owners? That Android has moved on? That no one loves you anymore? Well, take heart: T-Mobile isn’t done updating you yet. The tiniest of updates is at this time in the process of rolling out to G1s across the land, featuring improved “call performance” without “any additional feature enhancements.” In other words, this is a one-trick pony — but probably a good one, and it’s still better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. The update’s already being rolled out, and all customers should have it by March 15.

For Rogers, HTC Magic + Sense = Magic+

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Thought that one of the first major Android devices in the world would go away without a fight? Think again! T-Mobile and Rogers have taken two very different roads to extend the lives of their HTC Sapphire-based devices. Big Magenta, of course, has opted to make a hardware tweak, adding a much-needed 3.5mm headphone jack and spitting out a faux wood limited edition; Rogers, meanwhile, rather suddenly updated the firmware with Sense. Oh, but that’s not all — it turns out that Rogers views the Sense upgrade as such a big deal that it’s changing the name of the phone altogether, tacking a plus symbol on the end. Yep, that’s right: meet the Magic+. Apart from Sense on 1.5 with a promise of 2.1 down the road, though, there’s nothing materially new in this place, so don’t feel too bad if you’ve been stuck with one of the plus-less models. No, seriously.
