Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 gets its Vodafone spotlight at long last

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

There’d been some drama not long ago on news that Vodafone was scrubbing its exclusive launch of Sony Ericsson’s troubled Xperia X2, but it turns out they still wanted a crack at the thing after all — just not in the UK, apparently, where it had originally been listed as “coming soon.” Instead, it’s Voda’s Spanish outpost that’s taking a crack at the phone, which features WinMo 6.5 (you might recall that this thing was declare way back around the time of 6.5’s release) alongside a WVGA AMOLED display, 8.1 megapixel camera, and full QWERTY keyboard — not bad on paper. Of course, at the €700 ($957) they’re charging sans contract, you’re probably plan to want to sign your name on the dotted line if you plan on picking it up.

Samsung M100S flaunted on video, looking snappy

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

An exhaustive video preview over eleven minutes long of Samsung’s just-declare M100S Android set for Korea has turned up on YouTube — and at a glance, it seems like Seoul residents pining after a Nexus One should be redirecting at least some of their lust over to this thing. It’s snappy (we’re particularly heartened by how little time it takes to get into the camera app), it appears to have some gorgeous custom widgets, and let’s be real, it’s hard to argue with any phone sporting an antenna that long — especially when said antenna carries mobile TV along with it. Buyers have another month or so to wait before picking this up, so savor these videos and make ‘em last.

Orange UK’s HTC Hero gets a minor firmware bump

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Want Android 2.1 on your Hero? Of course you do — but don’t look for it from HTC… at least, not yet. It should be available eventually — and in the meantime, you’re obviously welcome to do some digging for a cooked ROM from the good people at xda-developers — but for at this time, High Tech Computer is kicking out another Cupcake-based firmware for Hero users on Orange in the UK. Don’t expect anything groundbreaking in this place, but CoolSmartPhone reports that there’s at least a new People widget with a 3 x 3 grid, which sounds particularly handy for anyone with nine or fewer friends. If you want it, it’s a quick download away — not as cool as an OTA, of course, but still better than accidentally submerging your phone in boiling water.
