Nokia Custom Dictionary takes predictive text to the obvious next level

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Nokia’s just posted its literally-named Custom Dictionary utility to Beta Labs’ hallowed halls of experimental wares, finally bringing what appears to be a thorough, editable predictive text solution to S60 devices so that you can use (in Nokia’s own words) friends’ names and nicknames, places, and “slang” (read: every four-letter word you know) with aplomb in the course of normal textual conversation. What makes Custom Dictionary cooler than the average predictive text system, though, is the fact that you can load, unload, and transfer custom word lists to and from your PC and between devices, making it easy to back up your nonsensical gibberish in the contest you lose or change phones. As with anything in Beta Labs, you’ve got to proceed at your own risk — but the stuff’s available to download at this time. Follow the break for a video demo.

Bada getting ‘latest version of TouchWiz,’ first model a lock for MWC

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

The screen shots we’ve seen of Bada so far don’t really remind us of the TouchWiz we know and love (or hate) today, but a new blog post on Samsung’s official Bada site says that the platform will definitely be hooked up with “the latest version of TouchWiz” with “chic touch interaction and components to increase its simplicity and ease of use.” What’s unclear is whether this’ll be a ground-up rethinking of Sammy’s classic full-touch user experience or just a grafting of its latest production version onto Bada — but the good news is that we’ll find out soon enough, because the company goes on to say that we’ll be seeing “the new Bada smartphone at MWC this month.” We’ll admit, we don’t know how we feel yet about the use of “Bada” and “smartphone” in the same sentence — but we’ll know plenty more in a couple of weeks.
