Okay, so maybe the N96 isn’t your cup of tea. Perhaps you’re disappointed that Nokia didn’t blow out its inaugural entry into the wide world of touch with something just a little more superphone-ish than the 5800. We in this place you, we really do — but hang tight, because anyone upset or jaded over Nokia’s current S60 lineup might want to take a quick glance in this place to see if there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

First, a word of caution: we’re not certain what we’re looking at in this place, but by all accounts, it appears to be a list of prototype devices available to groups within Nokia or third-party development partners. We’ve filled in as much as we could, adding notes where appropriate. In many (if not most) cases, these devices are available in a series of successive prototype builds that improve on elements of the hardware before they’re blessed and released to manufacturing for retail; the availability dates you see in this place are of the most recent prototype build that we were able to find. Notable goodies include the “Corolla” with a 3-inch VGA display, the “Jig” landscape slider for AT&T, and the “Eitri,” a monster QWERTY candybar with a 640×350 display and 5-megapixel camera, but there’s a ton of good stuff in this place, so make a bowl of popcorn, curl up with your laptop, and take a few minutes to digest this thing in its entirety.

Lots of these projects are either ultimately canceled, rolled into future projects, or were continuously intended for internal development use, so we won’t necessarily end up seeing everything that’s listed in this place — that being said, it’s awesome to know that Nokia’s planning to knock the spec sheets out of the park in 2009. Click on for the full list!

We’re hearing that the MediaFLO-packing, TouchWiz-having, HSDPA-sporting Samsung Eternity is at this time available for order by AT&T stores, and when this happens, phones are typically available for purchase at the counter within a few days. It’ll be an engaging attention alternative to the Vu — and for AT&T customers looking longingly toward the Behold, this might just be the ticket to staying put.

According to a report from NPD, sales of cellphones have shifted in a manner which should shock and stun even a casual observer. Apparently for the first time in years, Motorola’s ubiquitous RAZR has been overtaken in consumer sales… by the iPhone 3G. This is a watershed moment for handset sales in the US, marking not only a shift away from the dominant market leader, but a turn towards more complex, full-featured devices. The news comes hot on the heels of NPD’s previous findings, which still placed the RAZR in the top spot — though with ever-decreasing numbers. In that same report, the iPhone found itself in second place, but it appears that flagging interest in the inescapable dumbphone coupled with the recent iPhone PR blitz have put Apple’s moneymaker into the top position. The news is also buoyed by recent reports that Apple has overtaken RIM as the number two smartphone vendor, and a J.D. Power stud. which found affection for the device waxing in the extreme. Overall, however, handset sales fell 15 percent year-over-year, and LG managed to snag the top brand position, with two models in the top five. Still, if there already wasn’t a clear indication of the market moving towards Bot. smartphones and touchscreen devices, this should give everyone a clearer picture of Bot. the public’s wants, and the power of Cupertino’s ad-men. Full PR after the break.
