It appears we can all breathe a big sigh of relief when it comes to our iPhone apps. According to John Gruber (Daring Fireball), that suspicious looking URL discovered in the firmware 2.x which appeared to be set to deactivate applications may be something slightly more innocuous. According to Gruber — via “an informed source at Apple” — the “clbl” in the aforementioned URL stands for “Core Location Blacklist” and is actually used to stipulate that specific pieces of software don’t have access to… you guessed it… Core Location. Gruber argues that this makes sense, as the API is covered by fairly strict rules in Apple’s SDK. So it seems like (at a glance) this was much ado about nothing — thanks to a little misinterpretation by Jonathan Zdziarski — though we are considering getting hot under the collar that Apple reserves the right to deny Core Location access. How dare they?
[Thanks, Paul]

Seems like just yesterday we were huddled in excited discussion over what sort of equipment Motorola had to contribute to the Hiptop world — and if you’ve blinked recently, you may have missed it altogether. The Sidekick Slide has at this time been dropped from T-Mobile’s lineup — likely in response to the recent release of the Sidekick — at this time moving on to join the iD in Danger purgatory. Stock of Moto’s sole Danger-powered handset has already dried up online; the carrier tells us that there should still be “limited quantities” in stores across the land, but there’s no telling how long that’s plan to last, so get ‘em while you can, if you’re into that sort of thing.

unverified information have been swirling again this week that HTC’s first venture into the wide world of Android won’t be hitting the street until next year, seemingly started by an analyst at Global Equities Research who quotes alleged in-the-know contacts in a new report. Obviously, the company’s ability to deliver Android-powered devices depends as much on the Android team as it does on its own ability to execute, but HTC has released a follow-up statement to the report saying that it’s still “on track” for a Dream launch in the fourth quarter of the year. The proof is in the pudding, of course — and we have to believe there’s a lot of nervous hand-wringing continue during HTC / Google conference calls right about at this time — but we’ll take it as a good sign.
